Additional Info:

Hannah Kagawa is a Christchurch-born, New Zealand-based percussionist and composer. She is in her final year studying a Bachelor of Music at the University of Canterbury under the guidance of Grammy-nominated percussionist Dr. Justin DeHart, and holds a Trinity College London ATCL Percussion Diploma. She currently teaches drums and percussion at the Beat Music Studios in Christchurch and occasionally plays with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as a casual percussionist.

Hannah performs in various ensembles across New Zealand, such as the NZSO National Youth Orchestra, and performed as a soloist with the Canterbury Philharmonia in November 2025. As a composer who won the UC Lilburn Composers Competition in 2024, her works have been commissioned and performed across four countries. She is recognised globally through involvement in international music events such as the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, USA, and Marimbafest in Perth, Australia. Hannah is also known for her skill in building orchestral instruments, with her focus on making music and percussion more accessible within the community.

Hannah teaches percussion to students as young as 5 years old, from a complete beginner to ATCL. She also teaches drums from beginner to Grade 5. She currently offers online lessons from the comfort of your own home. Students can choose how often they would like their lessons to be, and the contents will be fully customised to suit their needs.

Many teachers focus mainly on instrumental technique and coaching on how to play pieces, but overlook many other aspects of music. In Hannah’s lessons, she will guide you through every aspect of what it takes to become a musician – from covering the basics and solidifying technique, to teaching how to practice independently, looking after gear, and practising musicianship.

Hannah has experience with music exams such as Trinity College London and Trinity Rock and Pop. She also has a wide connection in the NZ music scene as well as the global percussion scene, which she can use to offer opportunities to students such as the NZSO National Youth Orchestra and the New Zealand Secondary School’s Orchestra.

Will Teach:

Beginners, Intermediate Grades, Advanced Grades, Diploma / Higher Levels, Adult Beginners
