Victoria, British Columbia based musician Devin Hawthorne plays an instrument you may never have heard of: the bassoon. They are proud to be a bassoonist, and while they know that many people have never heard or seen a bassoon, they strive to spread knowledge and love of the instrument wherever they go. They have been a part of several notable productions with high-level youth, intermediate and professional ensembles as a principal bassoonist, and aspire to continue being a valuable member of musically excellent ensembles.
These productions include a performance of Bedřich Smetana’s Má Vlast with the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, Op.125 with the UVic Symphonic Orchestra, and Philip Spark’s Symphonic Dances with the Meridiem Wind Orchestra. An additional project which Devin is excited to participate in is the Victoria Civic Orchestra’s next concert cycle which will culminate with a performance on May 27, 2023.
Their playing within these aforementioned contexts has been described as passionate and musically intelligent by internationally acclaimed conductors Yariv Aloni and Steven Capaldo. They have also received praise for their cooperative nature with other musicians within their section. Devin takes pride in their work, and aims to convey as much emotion, care, and passion through their music as possible. Devin has also played bassoon in various wind chamber ensembles for UVic since 2019, with their most notable performance to date coming in 2023 as they play principal bassoon in Igor Stravinsky’s Octet for Wind Instruments; this work will be performed by their chamber ensemble in April of 2023 in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival.
