Dr Chris Maxim is a highly experienced teacher, lecturer, adjudicator and examiner. As a private music teacher he has tutored people of all sorts of ages, from beginners to advanced. His pupils' successes include Distinction at Grade 8 and diplomas.
He is currently on the teaching staff of Junior Trinity, is an ABRSM examiner, a diploma examiner for the Guild of Church Musicians and a coach, assessor and moderator for the National Professional Qualifications for School Leaders. As and Education Consultant he trains and coaches music teachers in the UK and as far afield as Brazil.
He began his career at Cardiff University in the Department of Music, teaching a range of subjects that included history & analysis of music, historical performance practice, C18th harmony & counterpoint, aural perception, choral conducting and orchestral conducting. He also gave courses in the Department for Continuing Education. At the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama he taught history & analysis of music, C16th counterpoint, C18th harmony & counterpoint, fugue, aural perception, and keyboard harmony. In addition he supervised dissertations at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He also taught A-level music and theory of music in the Junior Department of the RWCMD. He tutored on Open University Music Summer Schools for many years.
Chris gained a PGCE in Secondary Music at the Institute of Education (University of London) and taught in London schools for 20 years. His various roles included Head of Music, Gifted & Talented Students Coordinator and Head of Performing Arts. For most of his school teaching career he was a senior leader (Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher). He has extensive experience of training other teachers in pedagogy and the use of data; and has appeared on Teachers' TV. He holds two Certificates in the Advanced Professional Practice of Education (with Distinction) and the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH). He was among the first people to be awarded Chartered London Teacher Status and is a Fellow of the College of Teachers (FCOT).
In addition to his degrees (BA, PhD), Chris's musical qualifications include LMusTCL, FLCM, FTCL and FVCM (Hons).
