Additional Info:

Hi there!  My name is Adam R. Sweet.  The R stands for Richard.  I was named after my Grandfather who was a surgeon in Boston.  I studied violin at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Conservatory of Music at Rivers.  I studied Chamber Music and Coaching at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music.  In College, I received a BA in Musicology where I focused on music theory, jazz, composition, electronic music, world music and music therapy.  I have a Masters in Ethnomusicology.  I studied World Music with David Reck at Amherst College among other things.  In 1980, I bought my first mandolin so I could play it with my band Backwoods Medicine, mostly Old Time and Bluegrass songs and instrumentals.  I attended every bluegrass or mandolin lecture or presentation I could find.  Lucky for me, I lived near Northampton's Iron Horse and was subjected to the music of Bill Monroe, David Grisman, Mike Marshall, Sam Bush and other mandolin greats.

I first started teaching mandolin at the Fretted Instrument Workshop in Amherst, and later that year at Downtown Sounds in Northampton.  I was asked to join the faculty at the Northampton Community Music Center and later the Keene Institute for Music and Related Arts.  In 1997, I began offering remote lessons online.  When I bought a house in South Hadley, I offered private lessons, group classes and mandolin orchestra rehearsals at my home there.

In 2018, I began to offer private lessons at my studio in Granby, MA.

I play mandolin and Irish bouzouki with Celticado, a traditional Celtic ensemble; and mandolin and fiddle with The Americana Project, a bluegrass and folk band.  I'm President of Mandolin New England, a 501c3 nonprofit music organization that puts on free classes and concerts throughout western MA and Providence, RI.

I live on an organic farm in western MA.  We raise apples, peaches, plums and pears.  We have raspberry and blueberry bushes and a large organic garden maintained mostly by my wife of 20+ years, Emily.

I have two boys: Parker and Richard, one dog and one cat.
