JONATHAN DAVID LITTLE is a composer, conductor, author, researcher, arts educator and project manager.
He completed a BMus(Hons) degree at the University of Melbourne – where he won the Lady Turner Exhibition for overall excellence – then undertook a PhD studying innovations in orchestration in the context of 19th and 20th century cultural history, alongside studies in church music and liturgy through the Australian College of Theology, and conducting studies with Gerald Gentry, former Staff Conductor, BBC. As a performer, he has sung or played with the Australian National Boys’ Choir, the Australian Youth Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and for new music workshops of the Australian Opera.
His atmospheric and evocative music is notable for its mystical beauty, intensity, richness of material, and intricate craftsmanship. He was the first Australian-born composer to be awarded the prestigious Collard Fellowship of the Worshipful Company of Musicians (est.1500), and also the first composer to receive a Professional Development Award from the UK music business’s own charity, the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund. In 2016 he won a Royal Philharmonic Society "ENCORE Choral" Award (UK), in 2017 Special Distinction for his orchestral music in the ASCAP Rudolf Nissim Prize (USA) – and in January 2018 his polychoral Kyrie was nominated for "Best Classical Music Recording" at the inaugural RoundGlass Global Music Awards in New York (USA-INDIA). His entire body of polychoral music was also nominated for the 2018 CHASS Australia Prize – the nation’s highest and most distinguished honour in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. He has also received BBC, PRS, Fanfare, Authors’ Foundation, Australia Council, Chagrin, Bliss, Leighton Trust, and other distinguished awards in the USA, UK and Australia.
Professor Little’s research, international recordings, and much published work revolve around concepts of colour and texture in musical composition, Orientalism and exotic orchestration in 19th- and 20th-century orchestral and operatic music, innovative spatial configurations of choral and instrumental groups, and aspects of commercial music in the digital age. He is former Consultant Editor of the Musicians’ and Songwriters’ Yearbook and author of two award-winning monographs on “exotic” orchestration. Major choral, string and orchestral recordings have been issued on PARMA (USA), and his concert music is published by Wirripang in Australia.
Positions held include Principal of the Academy of Contemporary Music (UK) (the first music education institution to win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise), Senior Lecturer in Music Industry Management at Buckinghamshire New University (the first such course in Europe), Visiting Lecturer in Media Music at the University of Surrey, and Professor of Music Composition/Music History and Head of Music Research at the University of Chichester – and subsequently Professor Emeritus. He is a Fellow of the London College of Music (FLCM), a Fellow of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (FISM), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).
