Koh Cheng Ya is an aspiring classical, pop and jazz violinist based in Singapore with diverse experiences of playing solo, chamber and orchestral music in different settings. Notable achievements include First Prize at the Music Singapore International Violin Competition (solo artist category), Gold Award at the Nanyang International Music Competition (solo artist category), Gold Award at the Singapore Raffles International Music Festival and Merit Award at the Singapore International Music Competition. She was the finalist (strings category) in the NAFA Concerto Competition, 2023.
Not only has Cheng Ya been an active participant in her school (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) orchestra, she has also performed in a variety of external orchestral groups such as the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, Orchestra of Music Makers, Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, The Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal College of Music Philharmonic Orchestra, Base Philharmonic Orchestra, Vocalise String Quartet, Vocalise Chamber Orchestra and The Purple Symphony. Conductors she has worked with include Lim Yau, Lin Juan, Joshua Tan, Leonard Tan, Chan Tze Law, Alvin Arumugan, Tan Wee-Hsin, Amanda Tan, Natalia Luis Bassa.
She collaborated with composer Alyssa Loh and made her solo contemporary piece debut – Winter’s Glow, at Lee Foundation Theatre as part of her module in her final year of bachelor’s studies.
In addition, Cheng Ya is also an avid chamber musician and most importantly a founding member of the CJXT string quartet, active on several occasions (NAFA Lee Foundation Theatre, Esplanade Concourse, etc.). The quartet has also participated in masterclasses with Lionel Tan, Leslie Tan, Foo Say Ming, and Zechariah Goh. In addition, she has also participated in interdisciplinary, collaborative projects involving dance and visual arts, and worked with student composers in realizing their music.
Previously from NAFA School of Young Talents, Cheng Ya has completed her bachelor studies at NAFA, in 2024, under the tutelage of Foo Say Ming. Her past teachers include Kong Zhaohui, Luo Biao (both also from the Singapore Symphony Orchestra) and Yin Ke. She is also grateful to various masterclass mentors such as Chan Yoong Han, Tang Tee Tong, and Tan Yenn Er, Elizabeth Chang, Mark Messenger. As a passionate educator, she taught at Singapore’s Fine Momentum and Viva School of Music and Ballet and LVL Music Academy, currently she is teaching privately.
